Abstract

Biodiesel is a mixture of mono alkyl fatty acid esters from vegetable oils or animal fats. Biodiesel produced from kapok (Ceiba pentandra) seed oil is one of the new alternative feed stocks for petroleum diesel. However, there is a problem because the viscosity of kapok seed oil is higher than petroleun diesel. To overcome this problem, kapok seed oil through the reaction of esterification transesterification by assisting the catalyst. The steps taken to get methyl ester were by reacting kapok seed oil and methanol with acid activated clay catalyst (H2SO4) of 100 grams of kapok seed oil with a mole ratio of oil: methanol was 1: 9, reaction temperature 600C, reaction time of on hour in reaction esterification. In the esterification reaction 20 grams of kapok seed oil with a variation of reaction time of 1, 1.5, and 2 hours. Variation in the amount of clay catalyst were 1%, 2%, 3%, at a temperature of 600C and stirring speed of 400 rpm. The highest biodiesel conversion results were obtained at reaction time of 1 hour with the amount of catalyst 2%, with a yield value of 77.83%, density value of 0.8678 g / m3, acid number of 0.3958, and viscosity of 3.8753 cSt. And already meets the biodiesel specification according to ISO-04-7182-2015. So that it can be concluded, the esterification of transesterification of kapok seed oil is able of producing biodiesel.
