Abstract

The study is aimed at revealing the process of teaching writing, the problems faced by the students, and the causes of problems faced by first year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Gemolong. This study is a qualitative study. The subject of the research is the English teacher and the students and the object of the study is teaching writing to the first year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 9 Gemolong. The data of this research are information taken from three sources of the data namely event, document, and informant. In collecting the data, the writer uses interview, observation, and document. To analyze the data, the writer uses interactive technique in data analysis. The procedure of English teaching learning process involves three main procedures, such as: (a). Engage, (b). Study, and (c) Activate. There are many difficulties faced by the teacher such as: the students face many difficulties in translating words, phrases, clauses, and sentences, the students are not willing to bring a dictionary and they felt afraid to consult it with their teacher, the teacher is less creative in conducting such atmosphere to the students, and the students have difficulties in finding and determining topic or main idea in making good writing. The causes of difficulties faced by the students are the difficulties in arranging sentences, the teaching techniques, the teacher’s less creativity, and difficulties in determining and developing topic.
