Abstract
Development in various industrial sectors carried out by the government proved to be able to improve the standard of living of the people. But the industrial sector also has a negative impact because it has the potential to produce waste. The rapid development of the textile industry in Indonesia, especially batik, makes the industry one of the biggest contributors to liquid waste from the coloring process. In the textile coloring process, more synthetic dyes, especially the azo group, are difficult to degrade. Research has been conducted on the oxidation of congo red dyes using sodium ferrate as an oxidizer. This research consists of synthesis and characterization of ferrates and their use to oxidize congo red dyes. Ferrate synthesis is carried out by reacting a solution of Fe(NO3)3 and oxidizing NaOCl in alkaline conditions. This synthesis produces crystals in the form of sodium ferrate which will then be tested using XRD. Dyestuff oxidation reactions carried out by batch systems and non-oxidized dyes were analyzed using spectrophotometric methods. In this study studied the effect of pH on the ability of ferrates to degrade congo red dyes. The results showed that sodium ferrate can effectively oxidize congo red dyes with a percentage of degradation of 85.71% at optimum pH conditions is 9.6. This relationship with pH indicates that oxidation with ferrates can degrade congo red dyes into smaller and more environmentally friendly molecules.
