Abstract
Lost foam casting is a casting method using styrofoam as a pattern planted in mold sand. Liquid metal will fill the mold when the pattern evaporates because of the heat from the molten metal. Mold evaporation has good accuracy for objects produced in accordance with the mold pattern made. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in styrofoam density on chemical composition, hardness, shrinkage, porosity and microstructure. This study uses used aluminium remelting in a smelting kitchen. There are 3 variations in styrofoam density. That is density 0,0084 g/cm3 , density 0,0132 g/cm3 and density 0,0185 g/cm3. Data Analysis shows that the shrinkage percentage value for variations in styrofoam density 0,0084 g/cm3 is 0,766%, and for variations in styrofoam density 0,0132 g/cm3 is 0,610%, while for variations in styrofoam density 0,0185 g/cm3 is 0,432%. Depreciation research results show that the dinsity 0,0084 g/cm3 has the highest shrinkage value and for the lowest shrinkage is 0,0185 g/cm3 and for density 0,0132 g/cm3 is between the two. The results of testing Portable Hardness Vickers were obtained for variations of 0,0084 g/cm3 is 66,972 kg/mm2, variations in density 0,0132 g/cm3 is 66,752 kg/mm2, and variations in density styrofoam 0,0185 g/cm3 is 62,108 kg/mm2, and for the results of chemical composition testing there are several elements including (Al) 91,90%, (Fe) 2,737%, (Zn) 2,286%, (Cu) 0,120%, dan (Mg) is 0,6081%.
