Abstract

Mental illness is currently the main topic throughout the world, because it is increasingly found in everyday life. Based on Basic Health Research in 2018 conducted by the Ministry of Health explained that the proportion of households with family members of schizophrenia or other psychosis mental disorders based on the province experienced a very significant increase, which rose from 1.7% to 7%. Health problems or mental disorders are also one of the chronic diseases that require regular or ongoing care, not only the individuals involved suffer losses resulting from this situation, but also their family members and society in general. Family response in solving problems and dealing with changes that occur is important to be used as a basis in providing nursing care to families who have family members with mental disorders. Objective to describe the coping mechanism of the family which has mental disorders family members. The research method is used quantitative using descriptive survey method. Respondents numbered 80 peoples, in the selection of respondents using accidental sampling technique. Research Results is the coping mechanism is used by respondents has only slightly different results where 41 respondents have an adaptive coping mechanism and 39 respondents have a maladaptive coping mechanism. The conclusion is coping mechanisms is carried out by respondents can be influenced by several factors including age, educational background, employment, economic status, and relationships with clients, besides these factors can also be influenced by how respondents perceive a problem, how to solve it, and how social support obtained by each respondent.
