Abstract
The object of the research is the movie entitled The Three Musketeers by Dumas. The study gives focus on psychoanalytic approach as reflected in Dumas’ The Three Musketeers. The aim of the study is finding the criticism on moral, social value, and the defense mechanism of D’Artagnan as the major character of the story. The study belongs to a qualitative study. In this method, the researcher uses two data sources namely primary and secondary data. The primary data source and object of study is the movie The Three Musketeers itself, meanwhile the secondary is any literature related with the study. The technique of data analysis in this study is descriptive to make an interpretation of the text and content analysis using deductive and inductive method. The result of the study shows the following conclusion. First, based on the structural analysis it is clear that in this novel, Dumas wants to convey an idea that people had to do defense mechanism in order to cope the paint of anxiety. Second, based on the psychoanalytic analysis, it sees that in Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers, The major character has an anxiety in his life, because he has an imperfect mental.
