Abstract

Culture is an important thing that must be learned and understood in carrying out an identity because culture is one of the identities possessed by humans life. The meaning of cultural identity needs to be studied to solve the problem of cultural phenomena in the cross-cultural sphere. As one of efforts made by one of the unique tribes in the country of Mongolia, that is the Kazakh tribe with the culture that they bring as a minority group of immigrants can adapt and survive in the midst of progress in the age and the geographical conditions of the environment are quite difficult for them. This research aims to find out how the adaptation carried out by the Kazakh Mongolian tribe to current environment of the region. The theory used in this research is Identity Negotiation from Ting-Toomey. This research use descriptive qualitative approach. Researchers use primary data, in-depth interviews, and secondary data is using of documentation and using purposive sampling as a technique of collecting data on informants who are in accordance with their cultural identity qualifications that is the citizens of the Kazakh, one of the mosque priests and Mongolian Kazakhs who work in the government. Then the data were analyzed by data source triangulation belonging to Miles and Huberman. This research successfully demonstrated the results of negotiating their identities in order to survive in the present region. The results of the identity negotiations are summarized in three categories, that is community harmonization, religious concessions and lifestyle changes. Regarding culture does require an identity negotiation in order to good life, presence of tolerance among fellow humans. Obtaining effective identity negotiations certainly requires time and to be effective if both parties feel understood, respected and valued.
