Abstract

Prisoners are a group at risk of experiencing psychological problems in the form of depression with symptoms such as feeling sad, depressed, feeling guilty, difficulty sleeping, reduced appetite, withdrawal, pessimism and emotional ease due to the inability of prisoners to adjust to the transition of their current roles. An alternative intervention to reduce depression is the Interpersonal Psychotherapy Role Transition Area. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Interpersonal Psychotherapy Role Transition Area in reducing depression in prisoners. The research method used quasi experiments. The subjects of the study were 12 non-recidivist inmates, who had depression in the moderate, severe and extreme categories that had been measured using the scale of the Burn Depression Checklist (BDC). Intervention Interpersonal Psychotherapy Role Transition Area consists of 5 sessions, namely pre-session, initial session, middle session, relaxation and termination. The results showed that there were significant differences between pre-test, post-test and follow-up before intervention was given and after intervention. Based on the non-parametric statistical test Friedman Test through the mean rank value it is known that the mean pre-test is higher than the post-test and follow-up with Chi Square of 24,000 and Asymp. Sig is 0.000 (p <0.05), the mean pre test is 3.00; post test 2.00 and follow up 1.00. Mann Whitney U test The post-test test in the two groups of results shows that Z is -2.255 with Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) of 0.024 (p <0.05), with Mean Rank of 9.25 for KE and 15.75 for KK. Therefore, there was a difference in the level of depression between the groups given the intervention (KE) and the group not given the intervention (KK). The level of depression that was given intervention was lower than the level of depression of the KK who was not given an intervention, so it can be concluded that the Interpersonal Psychotherapy Role Transition Area was effective in reducing depression in prisoners in Surakarta Class I Prison.
