Abstract

Background: Pare fruit (Momordica charantia L.) is one of the herbs, the active ingredient such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and triterpenoids contained in the ethanol extract of pare fruit (Momordica charantia L.) has antibacterial and antifungal activity. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans are two pathogens in humans that are medically important. Both of them can simultaneously infect the gastrointestinal organs. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the antibacterial ethanol extract of pare fruit (Momordica charantia L.) fruit against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal against Candida albicans. Methods: This study is an experimental study with a post-test only controlled group design method. Pare fruit extract (Momordica charantia L.) is divided into several concentrations namely 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%. The hilton muller media is planted with bacteria and agar-sobouroud dextrose media plantedby fungi The wells are extracted from pare fruit extract in various concentrations. Incubation at 37o C for 24 hours. Then the diameter of the inhibition zone is measured by calipers. Results: The diameter of ethanol extract of pare fruit (Momordica charantia L.) the inhibitory zone of 60% and 80% against Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria had the same effect as chloramphenicol positive control. Statistical tests on the of bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa using One Way Annova test p value = 0.000. The diameter of the inhibitory zone of ethanol extract 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of bitter melon fruit (Momordica charantia L.) on the fungi Candida albicans has not had the same effect with the positive control of nystatin. Statistical tests on the fungi of Candida albicans using the Kruskall-Wallis test p value = 0.001. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of pare fruit (Momordica charantia L.) has an antibacterial effect Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal against Candida albicans. The minimum inhibition levels are 20% for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 40% for Candida albicans.
