Abstract

This research aims to determine the most frequent vowel sounds shift made by the students and also describe the reason of the shift vowel sounds used by the students. This research is in the domain of descriptive research. In collecting the data, the writer applies dirrect observation. The first step of collecting data is that the writer asks the students’ to produce their sounds by reading the text and then records the students’ sounds in producing English. The writer uses recorder to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the writer classifies and identifies them based on the theory of the description of the English sounds by Wolfram, and transcribes the data into phonetic details transcription. The result of the data analysis shows that the students produced 10 shifts in vowel sound. From each vowel shift, 9.37% shift is produced in vowel sound [i:] into [aɪ], [ɪ], [ε]; 6.25% shift produced in vowel sound [ɪ] into [ə], [ε]; 9.37% shift produced in vowel sound [ε] shift to [ɪ], [ə], [i:]; 12.50% shift produced in vowel sound [æ] into [ɑ:], [ʌ], [ε], [ə]; 18.75% shift produced in vowel sound [ə] shift to [ɪ], [ʌ], [ε], [ɔ], [ʊ], [ɑ:]; 3.12% shift produced in vowel sound [ʌ] into [ɔ]; 6.25% shit produced in vowel sound [u:] into [ʊ], [ɔʊ]; 15.62% shift produced in vowel sound [ɔ:] into [ɑ:], [ʌ], [aʊ], [ə], [ɔ]; 6.25% shift produced in vowel sound [ɔ] into [ə], [ɔ:]; and 12.50% shift is produced in vowel sound [ɑ:] into [ε], [ɪ], [ə], [ʌ]. The reason of the shift vowel sound by the students occurred because of the slip of the tongue or by being influenced by their region and mother tongue, because of their pronunciation sound like with the phoneme it self, and because of the elasticity organ of speech.
