Abstract

Digital skills are one of the problems that led to the emergence of the digital divide amid the rapid development of Information and Communication Technology. The rapid development of ICTs has been accompanied by an increase in information needs that have caused people living in the era of the information society to have the skills or skills to coordinate ICT so that their information needs can be met. This study uses the digital skills concept by Jan A. van Djik to illustrate how far the skills possessed by students who live in Islamic boarding schools in operating ICTs to fulfill their information needs. PPMI Assalaam is one of the Islamic educational institutions in Surakarta that focuses on teaching the knowledge of Islamic religion to its santri and imposes a number of limitations in using ICT for its students with specific aims and objectives. The study used a qualitative descriptive method that aims to explain the phenomena that are happening factually by collecting data in depth. Data collection techniques used were non-participant observation and in-depth interviews. The researcher also uses data triangulation for data validity. The results of the observations made by researchers in the Assalaam Islamic Modern Islamic Boarding School indicate that not all santri who live in the cottage can use the ICT facilities provided by the lodge. In addition to the very limited amount of media, daily activities that are very crowded make the santri a little distracted from the use of ICT.
