Abstract

The development of the modern market monopolized private sectors, has flourished in most areas of Indonesia. It grows massively and almost takes over the existence of traditional markets where is filled most of the small medium entrepreneurs or traders. The contrast distinction in physical and management between the traditional and modern markets, are one of the factors creating the gap. However, physical improvements of market buildings done by the government through revitalization program have yet to create significant impact. Then a new strategy is needed to increase the competitiveness and decrease the gap, in this case there is a tourist market. The development of the traditional Karangpandan market to be a creative tourist destination for local and foreign tourists are expected to increase competitiveness. Applying tropical architecture, minimalist or modern style, and considering the elements of tradition can create attractiveness of this market building. And moreover, the concept of creative tourism can add value and the quality of tourism destination for end-users not only to buy tourism product but also the experience. Through this new development of the iconic market along with creating other tourism spots and tracks inside the region can raise the economy of the local community.
