Abstract
Composites are materials formed from two or more components which are combined as macroscopic structural units with one component as a matrix and the other as reinforcing fibers. Baggase is a pulp from sugar cane which has been extracted from sugar. Bagasse has a proper tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. The thermosetting matrix used in the research is epoxy resin because epoxy has a high level of strength and toughness. The composites will be cross linking with hydroxymethylated resorcinol (HMR) solution in the bagasse. Bagasse coated with an HMR solution can increase the tensile strength of the composite. The independent variables used are bagasse composition of 4%; 8%; and 12%, epoxy resin by 96%; 92%; and 88% and bagasse coating using 5 ml / gram bagasse HMR solution; 7,5 ml / gram bagasse and without coating HMR solution. Bagasse is created using the method of making hand lay-ups. In this process, bagasse is inserted manually into the mold, then the resin is flattened using a hand roll to all layers of fiber. After the composite is finished, then the tensile strength and modulus elasticity are tested. The highest tensile strength of 9 experiments was found in the second variable (bagasse 8%, resin 92%) with a coating of HMR 7 ml / gram bagasse solution of 1,916 MPa. The highest modulus of elasticity is in variable 1 (bagasse 4%, resin 96%) without coating HMR solution of 160,076 MPa.
