Abstract

The background of the problem in this study is due to the low ability of understanding the concept of mathematics students of class VIII D SMP Negeri 1 Ngemplak Boyolali. The purpose of this research is to describe the improvement of understanding of mathematical concepts of students of class VIII D SMP N 1 Ngemplak through the implementation of Learning Cycle model "5E". Research subjects were students and math teachers. Subjects in this study were obtained from students who numbered 34 people consisting of 14 male students and 20 female students and teachers of grade VIII mathematics. This study includes the type of classroom action research. Techniques of collecting data through observation methods, tests, field notes, and documentation. Data analysis techniques use data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The result of the research shows improvement of understanding ability of mathematics concept seen from indicator: 1. Ability to restart a concept before action 5 student (14,70%) after action become 30 student (88,23%) 2. Ability to present mathematics concept before action 4 student (11.76%) after action to 27 students (79,41%) 3. Ability to apply concept on problem solving before action of 3 student (8,83%) after action 30 student (88,23%)
