Abstract
Carburizing process for AISI 4140 steel to test hardness with the method of testing and identification of microstructure. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of hardness from AISI 4140 material that has carried out the coating process with the plasma carburizing method. Samples in the form of AISI 4140 steel cut into 30 samples, then polishing with Autosol using sandpaper with sizes 120 until 5000 mesh. Then the sample that has been dipped is carburized with various pressure 1,2; 1,4; 1,6; 1,8 and 2,0 mBar and a fixed temperature and time. The highest highest or obtained optimally at 1.4 mbar. This is due to a process that is faster and larger than the carbon in AISI 4140 steel can not follow the deposition rate that will occur at the bottom of the accumulation of carbon atoms. Thus, nothing is the same as the result of stacking carbon atoms on the surface.Testing of the microstructure resulted in a thin layer visible on the outside of the surface with the carbon element identified as very thin.
