Abstract

are the forms of utterances, (2) what are the kinds of metaphorical expressions, (3) what are the speaker’s intentions of the metaphorical expressions used in George W Bush’s speeches. This research uses documentation and observation methods to get the data. The data are metaphor expressions used in George W Bush’s speeches if “Global War on Terror.” The source of the data is the manuscript of George Bush’s speeches published in official website of United States of America Government. To answer those problems, this research employs qualitative research method and analyzed by using socio-pragmatics analysis, especially the form of metaphor expressions by using the theory of sentence form, kinds of metaphor by using George Lakoff’s classification, and the intentions of the speaker by applying Speech Act theory. The result of the analysis shows that first, there are three forms of utterance occurred in Gorge Bush’s speeches, namely declarative, imperative, and interrogative sentence. Second is the classification of metaphor expressions which are extended, mixed, dead, and synecdoche metaphor. Third, the intention of metaphor expressions are stereotyping, threatening, warning, showing sadness, showing hatred, commanding, showing hope, showing gratitude, and informing.
