Abstract

The equipment of offerings in heirloom carnival that has a meaning and message for human life. The message are not conveyed directly, but through the materials that used in the offering which is each material has its own meaning that can be used as a lesson for human life. Symbol also contain a messages or values. The purpose of this present study is to describe the meaning of culture symbolic that in the equipment of the offering in the procession of Suro 1 night culture carnaval in Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta. In this present study, the researcher use a qualitative descriptive method with the objects of the research is the equipment of offerings in the procession of Suro 1 night culture carnaval. The techniques of data collection in this research are using observation, documentation, and interview. The result of this study indicate that there are eight equipment of the offering that used in the procession Suro 1 night culture carnaval, there are: 1) The charcoal symbolize the ugliness/badness that is burned with incense so that the bad things in this world also burned and dissapear by itself; 2) The whip has a meaning that whoever doing swerve or not appropriate with Islam, then it should be whipped; 3) The lighting tools symbolize a human should have a bright heart; 4) The four sticky rice colors symbolize human characters and enten-enten is also symbolized human testing; 5) The chicken ingkung (grilled chicken) symbolize the sincere sacrifice and the utterance of gratitude to Allah or ancestor who give a safety and protection; 6) The Jenang 2 pathi symbolize a request for blessing to parents; 7) The Jenang grendul symbolize a life that full of trials; 8) The jenang abang putih symbolize the origin of human life.
