Abstract

This research is aimed at finding (1) the language form, (2) language function and (3) the difference and similarities of the Kumayl Prayer (Islam) and the Rosary Prayer (Catholics). The data are the prayer utterances in the form of words, phrases, and sentences that are taken from the prayer manuscripts; they are the Kumayl Prayer and the Rosary Prayer. In collecting the data, the writer uses document and observation method by applying techniques of reading the manuscript, determining form of the Kumayl Prayer and the Rosary Prayer by referring to linguistic forms. To describe the intention of the Kumayl Prayer and the Rosary Prayer, the writer uses Speech Act theory especially locution and illocution. To describe the differences and the similarities of the Kumayl Prayer and the Rosary Prayer, the writer uses the numbers of language form and functions of the prayers and compares them. The study shows that (1) the language forms used in the Kumayl Prayer are (a) words (b) phrase (c) clause and (d) sentence. In the Rosary Prayer, the language forms are: (a) phrase and sentence; (2) language function the writer found in the Kumayl Prayer, are (a) to assert (b) to state (c) to beg (d) to ask (e) to assure (f) to promise (g) to pledge (h) to praise (i) to admit (j) to confess and (k) to affirm. In the Rosary Prayer, the writer found; (a) to assert, (b) to beg (c) to praise and (d) to greet; and (3) the differences and similarities of the Kumayl Prayer and the Rosary Prayer, are that (a) the most language form used by the Kumayl Prayer is declarative and complex sentence while by the Rosary Prayer is imperative and simple sentence and (b) the Kumayl Prayer has more various language functions. The similarities of the both Prayers are: that (a) both prayers employ declarative and imperative sentence and (c) both prayers employ simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence and compound complex sentence.
