Abstract
The purpose of research to describe the types of difficulties the student in solving the real number system and analyze the factors cause. This type of research is qualitative descriptive. The subject is a student Class 4A Math Education FKIP UMS amounted to 3 people. Data collection methods used are interviews and documentation. Technique of data analysis using data reduction, the presentation of data, and the withdrawal of the conclusion (verification of data). The results showed that students with a high level of ability (S1) no difficulty, the student with the ability levels are only partially (S2), and students are having trouble with a low level of capability (S3) experience the first difficulty, difficulty to transfer knowledge viewed from students having difficulty in writing down and apply concepts that include: 1) difficulties in the steps of proof, 2) the difficulty of determining the theorem is used, both the difficulty of the operation count visits from students having difficulty in writing the symbols which include difficulty expressing in the form of a non algebra. Factors cause students experiencing difficulty that is not understanding the real number system, the material in a hurry in working on the problem, lack of practice, students determine the concept confused, students are not given the concepts, and students are less meticulous in writing down step of proof.
