Abstract

This research is aimed at answering the variations, the communicative functions and the reasons of address terms used by the characters in Blood Diamond movie manuscript. The research method used by the writer is descriptive qualitative method. The data are the address terms used in Blood Diamond movie manuscript. These are taken through an observation method which involves reading and watching the movie manuscript, coding the data collected, classifying the data dealing with address terms, and the last is presenting and discussing the data. To answer the variations, the communicative functions, and the reasons mentioned in problem of study, the writer applies Sosiolingustic theory to solve them. The theory includes Notion of Address Terms, Social Dimension of Connunication, Dell Hyme’s Ethnography of Communication, and Key Terms Used in Movie Manuscript. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds some results of the analysis. First, the variations of address terms are applied into twelve variations, they are: first name, last name, nick name, full name, intimate name, kinship name, mockery name, title, profession, title plus first name, title plus last name, and title plus profession. The next, the writer finds that communicative functions of the address are grouped into ten categories, they are highest rank to higher rank, higher rank to highest rank, higher rank to higher rank, higher rank to common people, common people to higher rank, lower rank to higher rank, lower rank to lower rank, lower rank to common people, common people to lower rank, and common people to common people. The last one, the writer finds the reasons of using address terms employed by the characters are showing anger, anxiety, intimacy, kinship, mockeries, name, power or authority, and respectful.
