Abstract
The rise of international shopping centers and mass media that attract students' attention are products that are expensive, well-known brands, rarely purchased, have a high social status so students tend to have consumptive behavior. In fact, they tend to do debt activities to meet their needs. This study aims to determine the relationship between consumptive behavior and debt behavior, and the effective contribution of consumptive behavior to debt behavior. Researchers used research subjects as many as 210 students at the Faculty of Psychology, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta with Disproporsionaal sampling technique. Data collection method uses the Consumptive Behavior Scale and the Debt Behavior Scale. Data analysis is done with product moment analysis. The result of the correlation coefficient (r) is 0.476 with sig. (1-tailed) = 0,000; p <0.01 shows that there is a very significant positive relationship between consumer behavior and debt behavior. Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that the consumptive behavior variable has an empirical mean (RE) of 55.5 and a hypothetical mean (RH) of 67.5, which means that the consumptive behavior of the research subjects is low. The variable of debt behavior has an empirical mean (RE) of 57.3 and a hypothetical mean (RH) of 72.5 which means that the debt behavior of the research subject is low. Effective contribution of consumptive behavior is 22.6% to debt behavior.
