Abstract

The meaning of marriage for women has a large share in influencing the success of the household. The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the meaning of marriage for women who remarry. This study uses a phenomenological qualitative approach. Research informants were 6 women who were taken using purposive sampling technique. This study was carried out in two villages in Kartoharjo sub-district, Madiun city. The semi-structured interview form was used as a research data collection tool and analyzed by thematic analysis. The results show that for women marriage is a relationship that must be maintained for life where the husband and wife must have a "mutual" feeling. Marriage unites different husband and wife families so that the bond must be legalized in religion, law, and social recognition. Marriage is different from other types of relationships where women get economic security, psychological comfort, social respect, ancestry, and religious guidance. The dynamics in marriage make women more careful in deciding household matters, where effective adaptation and communication based on obedience to God Almighty is the key to achieving marital success. Social, economic, sexual and violent problems allow divorce to occur which is not dreamed of by women in this study. Marriage is defined as a complex relationship that can experience change from before marriage until remarriage is influenced by age, experience in interpersonal relationships, age of marriage, role in marriage, premarital family interaction, and child ownership.
