Abstract

Students of pesantren who have a strong religious identity sometimes experience difficulties in the society with a stigma of terrorism when there are issues of religious radicalism. This study aims to provide an overview of the optimism of Islamic boarding school students in facing the issue of religious radicalism and the factors that influence it. The subjects of this study were teenagers aged 15-21 years who were actively studying at Islamic boarding schools and male in Sukoharjo Regency. This study uses purposive sampling technique in selecting informants. The technique used to collect data is interview. Data analysis uses content analysis techniques. The results showed that the subject had strong optimism which was shown by continuing to do something right even though it was considered as an extremist. Learning and preaching the knowledge possessed by radicals is a way that according to the subject is able to straighten negative stigma in the community. Subjects remain happy and confident of being able to deal with the issue of religious radicalism because they are convinced of what is promised by their Lord and His Prophet about the glory of Islam. The factors that influence santri's optimism in dealing with the issue of religious radicalism are the support of parents and religious teachers, the promises of God and his Prophet, 2 high confidence in his abilities, and always motivated to maintain a positive outlook
