Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the type of error and the cause of the mistakes made by students in solving the social arithmetic story problem based on Newman's Error Analysis (NEA) in class VII. Newman's Error Analysis consists of five stages: reading, comprehension, process skill, and writing the final answer (encoding). The research of this study are 22 students and taken 4 subjects of A, B, C, and D from class A VII of MTs Negeri 6 Sragen. Data collection techniques this study are tests, interviews, and documentation. The Instrument used was in the form of a question instrument. The validity of the data using triangulation method, while data analysis techniques using reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results of this study indicateat stage (1) Reading (reading) thatstudents' errors in reading the matter of 12.12%, then in cluded in the qualification is very low. At stage (2) Under standing (comprehension) that the student's mistake in under standing the problem of 12.12%, then included in the qualification is very low. (3) Transformation (transformation) that the student's mistake in transforming answeris 63.63%, it is included in high qualification. (4) Under take process (skill process) that the student error inconducting process answere qualto 75.75%, hence included in high qualification. (5) Writing the final answer (encoding) that the student error inconducting the answer process of 72.72%, then in cluded in high qualification. It can be concluded that the students have not perfectly solved the arithmetic story problem because there are still errors based on Newman's Error Analysis (NEA).
