Abstract

The research is about describing deixis used in Ernest Hemingway’s “The Killers” Short Story. The objectives are 1) to identify the types of deixis used in Ernest Hemingway’s “The Killers” Short Story, and 2) to describe the reference of each deixis in Ernest Hemingway’s “The Killers” Short Story. In this research, the writer uses a descriptive qualitative. The data are the deictic or deixis words included in short story. She applies a documentation method to collect the data. To analyze the data the writer 1) identifies the types of deixis in short story by referring kinds of deixis, and 2) to describe the reference of the use of deixis words employed in short story, the writer refers to the discourse theory. Based on the result of analysis, the writer finds five forms of deixis used in Ernest Hemingway’s “The Killers” Short Story. They are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. She also finds five reference of refers to use of deixis in Ernest Hemingway’s “The Killers” Short Story. They are reference of person deixis, reference of place deixis, reference of time deixis, reference of discourse deixis, and reference of social deixis.
