Abstract

This study aims to compare the gender marker of Javanese language and English language in morphological theory especially in morpheme. The writer uses qualitative research to describe the comparison between male, female and neutral gender in Javanese and English gender. The data in this study are words that contain the Javanese gender and English gender. The source of the data is dictionary. The writer uses two kinds of dictionary i.e Javanese-English dictionary and Oxford dictionary. The writer found the data by reading the dictionary. The writer found 114 data in Javanese gender. The 114 data of Javanese gender consists of 24 for male, 29 for female and 60 for neutral gender. The writer found 533 data in English gender. The 533 data of English gender consists of 143 for male, 103 for female and 284 for neutral gender. The writer classifies the marker of gender is based on the meaning and suffixes that initiated the word of gender. The writer classifies the morpheme based on the number of morpheme. Based on the analysis in Javanese gender the writer found three markers of male category i.e zero marker, marker with adding suffixes and marker with initiated male to identify the phrase in male; in female category has three markers of gender i.e zero marker, marker with adding suffixes and marker with initiated female to identify the phrase in female; neutral gender has two markers of gender i.e marker followed by male or female name and zero marker. In Javanese gender consists of one morpheme, two morphemes, three morphemes and four morphemes. In English gender the writer found two markers of male category i.e zero marker and marker without adding suffixes to identify the male category; in female category has two marker of gender i.e zero marker and marker with adding suffixes to identify the female category; neutral category is zero markers. English gender consists of one morpheme, two morphemes and three morphemes. So the gender marker in Javanese gender is more complex than English gender.
