Abstract

Mental retardation is an inability of intellectual function and maladaptive behavior during development. There are some parents can accept their children but there are also parents who can not accept the fact to have children with mental retardation. Having a child's mental retardation that is causing disruption and delay in communication, cognitive, language, behavior, and social interaction causes parents to be derided from others, resulting in parents being negative about what they experience. The purpose of this research is to know the description of perception and attitude of parents to children mental retardation in SLBN Surakarta. The research used quantitative deskriotive method, using questionnaires to collect data. The subjects of this study are parents who have mental retardation of children in SLBN Surakarta as many as 65 parents. The result of statistical test with descriptive analysis is known that: 1) perception of parents to children with mental retardation in SLB N Surakarta most of the respondents are categorized as good (44,7%); and 2) Parent attitude toward child of mental retardation is classified as positive category as many as 51 people (76,5%)
