Abstract

ABSTRACT THE PRINCIPAL’S INNOVATION OF MUHAMMADIYAH 4 JUNIOR HIGH SURAKARTA TOWARDS SUPERIOR SCHOOL (ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018) Principal innovation has an important role in improving the quality of schools, then it can superior schools that have competitiveness with other schools. This research will explain the innovation of school principal at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta and describe the characteristics of superior school exist in that school. This research includes in field research with qualitative research types. The data collection methods used are interview, observation and documentation. The data analysis used in this research is deductive which is defined as the theory built based on the field data. From the research, it can be concluded that there are four types of the principal’s innovation of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta to face the superior schools by opening the excellent class programs, improvement of facilities and infrastructure, the design of safe and child friendly school and pioneering Adiwiyata school. The purpose of the innovation is to improve the quality of school, so that it can affect the attractiveness of the community to school their children in SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. In addition, there are several characteristics of superior school in SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta such as more rigorous in student selection, the effective principal leadership, superior extracurricular in the field of martial arts, a conducive school environment and high religious and social school culture.
