Abstract

Snake plant (Sansivieria trifasciata) are reported to have antibacterial activity because it contains tannins, saponin, phenolic and flavonoids that can inhibit the activity of bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus Sp but it has never been tested against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Ethanolic extract that are directly contact with the skin are less practical when used. Gel is chosen because it is able to improve therapeutic effectiveness and ease of use. Carbopol 934 is selected as a gel base which can increase the viscosity and the spreading power of a gel. The objective of this research was to know the antibacterial activity of gel of leaves extract of snake plant against Staphylococcus epidermidis with various concentration of gel base carbopol 934 and gel stability under accelerated conditions. After extraction with the maceration method, antibacterial activity test extract to Staphylococcus epidermidis was done using well diffusion method. The gel was prepared with 3 formulas each having a concentration of carbopoles 934 of 1%; 1,25% and 1,5%. The gels were tested for their physical properties before and after accelerated storage at 4○C and 40○C. The data were analyze statistically with ANOVA test. Based of ANOVA test result, there were no significant differences in pH, viscosity, dispersion and adhesiveness gel before and after accelerated storage. The antibacterial activity test of each formula gel of leaf extract snake plant gave a different but no significant result. Antibacterial activity gel extract snake plant leaves decreased after the formulation because of carbopol 934.
