Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the types of student difficulties and analyze the causal factors of students’ difficulty in solving the problem of re-constructing the curved side space. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. Techniques of data collection uses observation, interview and documentation. The data validity uses triangulation technique. The data analysis is through the stage of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this study indicate several types of difficulties experienced by students in solving the problem of re-building the curved side space, the difficulties are: (1) difficulty in understanding problem (8,3%) that is the inability of students in understanding the purpose of the problem, either already known information or being asked in question; (2) difficulty understanding concept or applying concept (30,56%) that is the student unable to comprehend and applying the principle of surface area, volume, and combined building of curved side space; (3) difficulty of recognizing symbols (8,3%) that is the inability of students to recognize the meaning of symbols about changes in unit area; (4) difficulty memorizing the formula (8,3%) that is students unable to memorize or forget about the surface area formula and the volume of building side curved space; (5) difficulty in calculation (13,89%) that is student can not perform operation count correctly. The causal factors of students’ difficulties in resolving the problem of building the curved side space, include: (1) The problem of repetition given less specific; (2) Students lack material understanding; (3) Students have less training questions; (4) Students forget or do not memorize by formula; (5) Students are less thorough in calculating.
