Abstract

Family quality time will be created whenever parents and children spend more time together. Generally, the quality time is emphasized in interaction instead of amount of the time spent with family. In this digital era we have been preoccupied by sophisticated technology which is unconciously connecting people on the distance and on the other side making a distance to closer one eventhough physically they gather in one place. This research aims to describe the quality time between parents and children in digital era. Informant in this study are 12 people consist of father, mother and children in 4 families by using purposive sampling with characteristics: (1) X-generation father working as teacher or private employee, (2) X or Y-generation mother working as teacher or housewife (3) 4-6 grader of elementary school toddler. Data in this study are collected by interview method regarding gadget usage pattern in family, parents-children interaction, as well as family quality time which are thematically analyzed then. According to this research’s output, it is known that all family members use gadget, however 3 families give a particular time limitation to their kids and give special attention and supervision as well. Family quality time is divided into couple of time terms: daily, weekly, semester-off, and recreational time with various activities in each family. Interaction between father and kids tends to be occurred in taking and picking up them from school, meanwhile mother interacts with their kids more at home. Father plays most important role in accompaniment of gadget usage by children.
