Abstract

This study aims to describe and deepen the dynamics of trust and distrust of college students on news in the instagram. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data is collected by an open-ended questionnaire which is shared online by google form and analysis by data categorization. The informant of this research are college student whose instagram account and the total are 224 informants. The results indicate the college student trust and distrust on news in the instagram those are: 46,8% believe, 34,4% hesitate, and 17,7% do not believe. There are three main factors that affect the trust and distrust, those are: First, news as product include: a) validity & reliability of news, b) the news publication quality in instagram, c) news objectivity, and d) the reasonable of the news, Second, the news producer/distributor (trustee) which are include: a) the trustor official, b) the account activity is up to date or not, c) the number of followers, viewers, likes, and real comments, d) partisanship orientation, e) profit orientation, f) the relevance of news content with consumer interest, g) the account attitude in discussing others, and h) the comment column as public discussion area, And Third, the news consumers (trustee) include: a) the trustee’s skill in selecting news, b) the usefulness of the news to consumer, and c) the emergence of criticism from consumers.
