Abstract

Today, the condition showed that math learning motivation on students’ of Junior High School grade VIII was lack and it is influenced by internal and external factor. This study purposes to understanding and descripting about math learning motivation on students’ grade VIII of SMP Diponegoro Surakarta. The study question is how students’ math learning motivation. What are support factor and obstacle factor, and how the teacher’s and friends’ role. Method which is applied in this study are qualitative based on phenomenology, the way taken the data by interview and observation. Informant criteria were 5 students of SMP Islam Diponegoro who had math score more than minimum criteria score, and 5 students who had math score less than minimum score criteria, and all of informant got the taught by same math teacher. Result of this study showed that final math score could not be attributed with learning motivation which is owned by a student.in other hand, actually the students have good learning attitude. Factors which is supported math learning motivation are a mother, family, more like calculate than memorize, shortcut math formula and realize about the important of math. Factors which is obstacle math learning motivation are the complicate of math subject and to long math formula. The teacher had given a role in growing math learning motivation for the students through give the reward for the student who achieved high score. However, the teacher’s teaching method is difficult to understand for the students. In addition, the teaching method that given was lack. Friends role in growing math learning motivation on students’ of Junior High School grade VIII was not yet optimal because there is no learning group and the students also rare to discuss about math subject in break time when they met each other.
