Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the process of interpesonal communication of teachers to establish self-confidence of students with autism, and find the barriers experienced by teachers in making students to be confident. The type of research is qualitative research applying descriptive approach. Technique of taking informant uses purposeive sampling by taking informant of elementary school teacher in SLB YKAB Surakarta who are handling autistic children in grade 3, 4 and 5. This research tries to test the validity of data using triangulation analysis, analyzing the subject answer by examining the truth with data source others available. Data analysis uses interactive model of Miles and Huberman consisting of three steps, namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing / verification. The results of this study show the teacher's interpersonal communication to the students prefers the positive message to the child to show self-confidence. The teacher also uses a touch of the child who is difficult to get their self-confidece so that students feel calm and do not get stressed. The heart-approach is one of the important key in understanding autistic students to make them confident. The obstacles to build the confidence of the autistic students come from the children themselves depending on the level of autism in the children, if the autism is high, it will take a long time to make the child confident. Therefore the teacher should give motivation repeatedly, simply and easily to be understood by autistic students. Keywords: Interpersonal Communication, Confidence, Teacher, Autistic Student
