Abstract

In social aspect, deaf children have the same needs as ordinary children, especially in interacting with the social environment, among individuals, groups etc. The curiosity of the child on something new raises curiosity and always wants to try it, including the curiosity about sex. In this process, parents need to protect children by providing them an understanding of sex education. The purpose of this study was to find out how the activity of verbal and nonverbal communication of the family in deaf children in instilling sex education. The research method applied descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques used in-depth interviews. The selection of resource persons used purposive sampling technique. The results of research indicated that the communication activities of parents in children with hearing impairment were based on the habits of parents associated with child behavior. When parents treated their deaf children equally with children who were not deaf, it will be easier to create good communication because children felt their parents accepted their existence. Besides, children also felt confident and appreciated. Verbal communication activities of parents were still in oral form and had not been able to use writing. Verbal communication activities generally required nonverbal communication assistance. Nonverbal communication activities of parents played very important role because of its function as a companion and substitute. Spatial cues (intimate distance and personal distance) were used by all informants. Vocal cues did not support the success of communication because it only applied to deaf children who can only heard sounds in certain frequencies. Visual cues were the cues that help the most success of communication between parents and children with hearing impairment. The emblems and illustrator cues had many variations for each meaning conveyed and not necessarily the same in each informant. Standard sign language had not been able to be applied even if parents had mastered it because the child could not understand the standard sign language.
