Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find whether there is a correlation between parent-child sexual communication and use of social media with adolescent’s sexual behavior. Respondents in this study were students and junior high school students and senior high school grade up to grade 12 as many as 186 people. The measuring tool used is the scale of adolescent sexual behavior, the parental sexual communication scale of children consisting of mother-child sexual communication and father-child sexual communication, and the scale of social media use. The results showed that between mother-child sexual communication, father-child sexual communication, and the use of social media are not related to adolescent’s sexual behavior. Mother-child sexual communication was not significantly correlated with adolescent sexual behavior (r = 0.033 with p = 0.328 (p> 0.05)), father-child sexual communication was not significantly associated with adolescent sexual behavior (r = 0.032 with p = 0.334 (p> 0.05)), and just the use of social media has a positive relationship with adolescent sexual behavior (r = 0.184 with p = 0.006 (p <0.05)). Intensive use of social media correlates with high adolescent sexual behavior. In addition to the above findings, when compared between adolescent boys and girls, there were differences in sexual communication with father, early age of dating, and accessed sexual material in the form of videos, pictures, and stories. However, no different in sexual behavior, sexual communication with mother, and use of social media. Thus it can be concluded that the use of social media is related to adolescent sexual behavior, but mother-child sexual communication and father-daughter sexual communication is not related to adolescent sexual behavior.
