Abstract
Medicine wastage poses a significant health problem. Unused medication endangers human life and health, results in non-optimal utilization of resources and causes considerable loss of money. Due to these issues, a study was conducted to identify the extent of medicine wastage in university setting. Searching for the cost, source, and examine the behaviours of the students as drugs consumers that contribute to such wastage. A prospective observational survey was conducted in faculty of pharmacy UMS among students. A total of 100 respondents take apart questionnaire-based survey on purposive sampling method. Data was analyzed by descriptive using Microsoft excel software. Results showed that total cost of all left over medicines found was Rp. 3.127.338,00. From the total cost of all left over medicines found was estimated to be it was revealed that Analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyral (16.3%) were of the highest number and costs in 16 founded therapeutical class. Common reason for unused medicine was be use it again at any time (46,32%). In plan or action about save and diposal medicine is by save it until expiration date than take an action of disposal (48,35%). While the origin of medicine is mostly supplied by drug store (71,39%). The study proposed that education and awareness programs should be implemented among pharmacy students in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta.
