Abstract
Grinding is a tool used for the process of reducing and cutting an abrasive workpiece through friction between the abrasive material and the workpiece. Grinding is also applied to the finishing process of the workpiece (refining the workpiece surface), smoothing the pieces, welding, and as metal sharpener such as knives and chisels. In this study using self-designed grinding stone with aluminum slag material that has been washed as abrasive material, which aims to find out how much the wear rate of grinding wheels own specimens, previous research, and Lippro brand grinding mill. The process of making the grinding stone begins with the preparation of materials to be used are liquid phenolic resin and powder, aluminum casting mesh 12 and 40, and fiberglass with a distance of 6 mm fiber. After that mix all the ingredients according to the composition that has been determined. Subsequently all the ingredients are inserted in the mold and compressed with a press machine with a pressure of 15 tons for 5 minutes. Then settled at room temperature at least 24 hours. Next sintering process at temperature 1400C for 1 hour. Tests performed are wear test with ASTM D-3702 standard. The results showed that the grinding stone with NaOH treatment had the highest level of wear. This is due to the effect of the NaOH, so that the grinding stone becomes brittle and damaged (grain breakage). Where at the time of testing, the grindstone experienced a faster erosion than the grinding wheels with water treatment and Lippro brand grinding wheels. However, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) does not affect the power of phenolic resin adhesion to aluminum slag. This is evidenced by the absence of a loose grindstone.
