Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of different geometric shapes of the descending channel to shrinkage, porosity defects, density, hardness and micro photographs. The raw material of this research is using used aluminum or junk alumunium, which is melted in small scale smelting kitchen. This research are used 3 types Sprue variations: Sprue triangle, Sprue square and Sprue circle. Testing of chemical composition using Emmision Spectrometer. To determine the shrinkage defect compare the dimensions of the original object with the specimen result of each variation of Sprue. The porosity defect can be seen by finding the value of density calculation, hardness testing using brinell test with ATSM standard E10, testing of microstructure with standard ATSM E3. The highest shrinkage average yields were on the Triangle Sprue of 3.68%, the Sprue square of 1.9% and for the circle Sprue by 2.04%. In porosity obtained from density, Triangle Sprue ρ = 2,746, Square Sprue ρ = 2,964 and Sprue circle ρ = 2,825 the higher density value then the material is more solid and the porosity is less. Material density is associated with higher hardness, obtained in triangle spray bronze testing of 88.25 BHN, a square Sprue of 102.5 BHN and a circle Sprue of 100.25 BHN. The result of the research showed that chemical composition was found in chemical element (Al) 87,1% as main material, (Si) 9,51%, (Fe) 1.08%, (Zn) 1,78% (Mn) 0,192% . So from the existing elements of this material include aluminum alloy silicon metal (Al-Si).
