Abstract

Background : Internet users in Indonesia reached 63 million people in which 80 % of the user are teenagers aged 15-19 years and 95 % used to access social media. Social media can build negative body image. Negative body image and low self esteem can affect physical health and psychology of an individual. A number of studies said that individual which has negative body image and low self esteem are possible for other symptoms psychiatry, one of them is anxiety. Objective : To determine the correlation between body image and self esteem with anxiety level among students who are social media users. Method : This is an observational analytic study with cross sectional approach. This study was conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Semin in December 2017 that uses 50 students as respondents taken by purposive sampling technique. The study used MBSRQ-AS, RSES and TMAS questionnaire. Data were analysed using Pearson method and linear regression with SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. Result : Based on linear regression, correlation value (r) -0,516 and p value 0,000 < 0,05 between body image and anxiety level among students who are social media users in SMA Negeri 1 Semin. And corellation value (r) -0,261 and p value 0,031 < 0,05 between self esteem and anxiety level among students who are social media users in SMA Negeri 1 Semin Conclusion : There is negative moderate and significant correlation between body image and anxiety level among students who are social media users in SMA Negeri 1 Semin. But there is negative low and significant correlation between self esteem and anxiety level among students who are social media users in SMA Negeri 1 Semin.
