Abstract

In the last recent year, glass bottles and other glass wasted material became more increasing. it has become a global problem because the waste of plastic and glass took a long time to decompose naturally. The purpose of this research is to develop a layer of glaze by using glass waste material with the additional material of calcite (CaCo3). This research was done by using a base material of ceramic with a thickness of 5 mm, width 15 mm and a length of 20 mm. The heating process was carried out by using the electric furnace. The burning process was conducted in the furnace with the temperature of 1000OC and holding time variation of 15, 30, and 45 minutes. The hardness test of the glaze layer was done using micro Vickers hardness tester. The Vickers test results were given 434.549 VHN for the base ceramic without the glaze layers after heating. The hardness results after glaze layering were 452.761, 479.914, 391.695 VHN with the holding time variation 15, 30, 45 minutes respectively. Therefore, glaze layering with the combination of glass and calcite (CaCo3) can increase the hardness layer of ceramic. The highest hardness value was obtained from the specimen with 30 minutes time of burning.
