Abstract
Gender roles of men and women are widely featured in Indonesian films including in religious film genre. Several studies have been conducted on gender and related to its portrayal in the film. The description of gender roles featured in the media including films, will impact society on how ideally men and women roles in life. The involvement of film producers also determines how the role of gender is shown in the mass media By using qualitative content analysis, this study aims to find out how men and women are featured in religious genre films related to female involvement in film production. The sample used in this film is religious films that released in 2008-2017, which in 2008 was the first phase of popular religious films in Indonesia. There were four films from the sample collection of the film, they are Kehormatan Dibalik Kerudung (2011), Tanda Tanya (2011), Assalamualaikum Beijing (2014) and Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika (2015). Seeing the producer's involvement in message production, this research uses a critical theory perspective on the production of discourse. The result of this study indicates that although there is a change in gender roles, film producers still maintain the characteristics of each gender in performing that role. It shows the reproduction of messages about gender that has been a culture in society.
