Abstract

Synthetic dyes usage in daily life has adverse effects on the environment since it is carcinogenic. Therefore, there must be an effort to produce a natural dyes that can replace the use of synthetic dyes. Mango has the potential to be used as natural dyes because it contains mangiferin pigments or flavonoids. This study uses fresh mango leaves and dry mango leaves to know whether if it can be used as a natural dye or not. Producing natural dyes from mango leaves is done by maceration method with different maceration time from 2, 4, 6, 8, until 10 days. To determine the groups that contain in those natural dyes, so it is doneby the FTIR testing to optimum dye levels of variation maceration time. In the test color fastness, it is used substances of fixator FeSO4, KAl(SO4)2.12H2O, and CaO. The result shows that the maceration time gives effect to the levels of dye generated, natural dyes highest levels shown during the maceration time of 10 days. FTIR Test of generated natural dyes can be seen that the leaves of fresh mango or wet and dry pigment containing mangiferin or flavonoids with the findings of cluster C = O in wave numbers 1,637.64 cm-1 and C = C in wave number 1,458.25 cm-1 on mango fresh leaves, while the mango dried leaves are found the group C = O at wave numbers 1,642.46 cm-1 and C = C in the wave number 1,563.37 cm-1. In the GS test (Grey Scale) of third fixator indicates is good results, but in the SS test (Staining Scale) best results is only indicated by natural dyes mango fresh leaves with those third fiksator.
