Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of parents in the implementation of therapy. This research uses qualitative approach of case study. Data collection using semi-structured interview techniques, observation and monitoring records. Informants in this study are selected based on the characteristics of parents who have children with autism 4-12 years old, with age background, education, parenting job varies. Informants consist of 16 people, 4 couples are main informant and supporting informants are 8 people. The results of this study gains the role of 7 parents who deliver and pick children up in therapy and school clinics, parent involvement in therapy and school activities, parent cooperation (support spouse), accompanying children activities (play, study, mentoring in ADL, Worship), monitoring child development, diet management, and financing child therapy. Father and mother are involved in mutual care. There are three dimensions of father involvement in nurturing that is directly (Engagement), indirect (Accesibility) and Responsibility. There is one of the family that’s shows the father’s role bigger than the mother. Father played the larger when the mother has not been able to accept fully the condition of the child. In additional to the mother busy help husband in work. Then the meaning of the existence of children with autism make parents able to accept, sincere and patient, understand and able to find a solution, although needs process to be able to accept autistic children. Routine is the important activity for an autistic child. Parent need to gain knowledge about autism and improving diet to reduce autistic behavior.
