Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of variation of volume fraction of reinforcing combination of teak wood and mahogany wood powder to tensile strength and polyester impact strength. The pattern of failure is observed with macro photos. The main ingredients of the research were teak and mahogany powder with mesh 30, unsaturated polyester resin 157 BQTN. The hardener used is MEKPO with concentration of 1%. The composite is made by press molding method. The volume fraction of hybrid composite reinforcement is 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%. Specimens and tensile and impact testing procedures refer to ASTM D 638 and ASTM D 256-00 standards. Fault cross section is done macro photo to identify the failure pattern. The results of this study indicate that tensile strength and impact strength of hybrid composites increases with the addition of powder volume fraction. The composite strength of hybrid composite has the most optimum value of powder fraction volume of Vƒ 50% is 20,81 MPa. The most optimum impact strength is the volume fraction of Vƒ 50% powder that is 0,142 J / mm². Fault mechanism, brittle fracture occurs due to tensile load and impact strength.
