Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of core thickness variation and variation of volume fraction to increase bending strength and impact of hybrid composite sandwich combination of E-glass and polyester glass fiber with combination of core of teak powder and mahogany powder. The fracture mechanism is observed with macro photographs. The main ingredients of the research are teak and mahogany teak with 30 mesh, rami fiber (random), E-glass (woven) fiber, unsaturated polyester resin 157 BQTN, NaOH technical. The hardener used is MEKPO with concentration of 1%. The composite is made by press molding method. The volume fraction (Vf) of hybrid sandwich composite reinforcement is 30%, 40% and 50%. While thick cores composite sandwich is 10 mm, 20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm. Specimens and bending and impack testing procedures refer to ASTM C 393-00 and ASTM D 6110-04 standards. Fault cross section is done macro photo to identify the failure pattern. The results of this study indicate that the ability to withstand bending moments and impact strength of hybrid sandwich composites increases with the addition of volume fraction and thickness on the core. The strength of the composite hybrid sandwich bending moment has the most optimum price on the powder fraction of (Vf) 50% with core thickness of 50 mm ie 56.69 N.mm. The most optimum impact strength was on the fraction of (Vf) 50% powder volume with 50 mm thick core of 0.0876 J / mm². Stages of the hybrid sandwich composite failure pattern are the failure of the composite bottom-side composite skin, the failure of the core shear, the upper skin delamination with the core, and failure press the skin on the top side.
