Abstract
The aim of this research is to know the effect of variation of cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) with phenolic resin matrix to wear rate, hardness, and coefficient of friction as alternative material of non brake asbestos brake, to brake linings resulted in shore D scale, Coefficient of friction. This research uses the material of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL), magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate, phenolic resin, graphite, glass fiber, aluminum, brass, and copper. Friction test using SNI 09-2663-1992 standard while hardness test using standard ASTM D2240 The results of hardness test showed that the addition of cashew nut shell (CNSL) will reduce the hardness value due to its rubbery and ductile characteristics, it is shown in the result of variation 0.9 gram that is 82.50 scale shore D. The best result of wear and tear approaching brake lining of Indopart brand in water condition , Brake fluid, and brine that is brake variation of 0.6 gram of CNSL powder. The best result of the friction test of 0.9 gram variation of CNSL powder was found coefficient of friction on dry and water condition that is 0.71 and 0.68, whereas at 0.6 gram variation in salt and oil condition is 0.67 and 0.60, on 0.3 gram of CNSL powder in brake fluid condition is 0.62 , So it can be described that the addition of the right CNSL powder will increase the coefficient of friction in certain conditions.
