Abstract

Nia Rieza/A320130149. THE TRANSLATION SHIFT ANALYSIS OF VERB PHRASE OF THE ALCHEMIST BY PAULO COELHO. Research Paper. School of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. May, 2017. Most of books come from other country and it was in their language well. People have to understand their meaning or message by translating or adapting that language. So that’s why translation is needed. This study aims to describe the translation shift of verb phrase found in The Alchemist novel and to clarify the translation quality of the novel. The type of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were collected from the sentences consisting of verb phrase. The data sources are novel The Alchemist and its translation. The result of this study shows that from 2454 data, there are 547 data belong to translation shift of verb phrase. The researcher finds 2 types of translation shift, they are structure and unit or level shift. Then there are 2454 data or 100% of accuracy level, 2246 data or 91,52% of acceptability level, and 2433 data or 99,14% of high readability. It can be concluded that the dominant shift is unit or level shift and the translation quality of this novel belongs to good translation.
