Abstract
Biodiesel is an alternative energy subtitue for diesel. The biodiesel was produce from waste cooking oil (WCO) with Calcium oxide (CaO) from eggshell as a catalyst. Two stage process, esterification and transesterification were applied to convert waste cooking oil to biodiesel. An acid catalyst (H2SO4) was used for catalyst of the esterification process, it was obtained Free Fatty Acid (FFA) amount of waste cooking oil that is equal to 0.95%. An heterogeneous base catalyst (CaO) from eggshell was used for catalyst of the transesterification process, the catalyst was calcined at 1000oC of temperature at 2 hours to activate the CaO compound on the eggshell. There is two independent variables, catalyst loading (% wt of the WCO) and reaction time (minutes) in the transesterification process. Catalyst loading was varied at 4, 6, 8, and 12% wt of the WCO, while the reaction time was varied at 40, 90, 180, and 200 minutes. The experimental results was found that the maximum conversion of biodiesel was 88.62% at the following reaction conditions: reaction temperature of 80oC, a reaction time of 180 minutes, a ratio of metanol to oil at 9:1, and the amount of catalyst at 6% wt of WCO.
