Abstract

The aims of this study was to describe the ability of students in question designing and problem solving on the topic of pyramid in 8th grade of second semester. There are three categories that concluded about the ability in question designing, they : the ability of high, medium and low, while there are four criteria of problem solving are understanding of the problem, making of troubleshooting plan, implementation of the plan and checking back. The type of this research is qualitative research. The subjects were 8 students drawn from class VIII C SMP N 2 academic year 2016/2017. The techniques of collecting data used in this research is interview, test, and documentation. The data validity uses a triangulation source, while data analysis techniques using data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results of this study indicate students with the ability to design questions with the three categories of the highest percentage of 72.42% means that students during the design of the work has added information and designing a low problem of 30% that the students during the design work is not appropriate yet only using the existing information . Problem solving based on Polya theory with 4 categories with the highest percentage of 26.48% that the students during the work have been able to draw the limas or write the formula and the lowest percentage of 22.88% that the students during the course of doing the re-checking just concluded the result of the counting.
